Recent Testimonial - Thirza T4 van:
"We wanted a van conversion that was just right for us and our active lifestyle and that’s what Jason and Camper Kong did.
Jason was keen to know what we were using our van for so that he could gear it up just for us. We needed it to carry our bikes, walking kit and for us to live in relative comfort both winter and summer.
We’ve got a kitchen, lots of storage, a comfy bed and a heater. Fantastic. It’s just great and we love it. Thanks Jason … you’ve done a grand job for us." (Conversion photos below)
Testimonial - July 2011 (Appeared in Caravan Motorhome & Camping Mart):
"Here’s the dream; sell the flat, burn my boats, buy a camper, travel, paint, write.
Unfortunately, a string of failed house sales saw my budget being rapidly depleted and I was almost on the point of giving up. Then, one day, instead of yet another disappointment the sale finally went through.
I had set my budget at £20,000 – it was fixed and there was no way I was going over it. My plan was to buy a good quality, second hand van and with the money remaining, get it fitted out in just the way I wanted, to a very high standard. My initial hopes were dashed; I received very negative responses from every converter that I approached. Then I saw Camper Kong listed, tentatively mentioned the price and received the reply “oh aye. I think we can do it”.
Try not to be put off by first impressions when you first arrive at Camper Kong, which is located in one of the less salubrious industrial areas between Bolton and Manchester bars adorn the windows of the red brick former warehouse, with he door tucked away under a metal fire escape. My slightly nervous knock was answered by a well muscled man with a buzz cut, holding two very large Alsatians by their collars. I might have turned tail on the spot, but he had shown such kindness and patience with my continual postponements and this continued as her agreed to fit me in to do the job within weeks.
Then followed my first real experience of Jason’s commitment to his customers. First of all, he was defiantly worried about my plan to buy a van, explaining that it could be a very risky business. He carried out a search on his computer and right near the top on the list was what he described as a rare Renault Master automatic, which seamed exactly what I wanted. His next advice proved invaluable; as he recommended that I pay £200 for a full AA inspection – in hindsight, because my van owner lived in London and would only deliver it to Birmingham. Jason simply set off on his motorbike to fetch it for me.
That first day when I had walked past the (actually quite friendly) dogs into Jason’s workshop, I saw at once that he could do an excellent job. The two vehicles he was working on were beautiful and specifically tailored to the individual customers needs. I caught my breath with excitement, as I felt the day was gradually drawing closer when I would finally own the camper I long dreamed of.
As for being a fussy customer – well I had numerous drawings and magazine cut outs which I discussed with Jason and some were simply not needed (we aren’t in the Arctic). Others were possible (little frown from Jason), others easy (confident smile). The agreed specification was arrived at within the money – and this he guaranteed.
I needed five belted seats, as I wanted to take my son and his family away sometimes, carrying a supplementary tent. Four belted rear seat would require a van well beyond the magic six meters, so we decided to keep the three front seats and have back ones that could also convert into a comfortable bed. I also needed a spotlight, a good skylight for doing art work, a shower, computer sockets, reversing camera and so on.
Jason contributed a few of his own ideas. He found a table on a tripod stand, which is ideal for my outdoor art work. He was also concerned that as an older woman on my own I should feel secure and he gave me some good advice, even adding, “You can always call me”. I parted with half the cash up front without a qualm. I knew I could trust Jason and when I picked the van up six weeks later... absolute joy! I drove off to start my new life grinning all the way.
Camper Kong – I hope you achieve all that you wish, as you certainly deserve success. With much love and very sincere thanks to you all" – Kitty Atkinson
Testimonial - November 2010 (Appeared in the Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly):
"PERSONAL CONVERSION - Having done the tent and caravan thing when the boys where young, Dave and I had our hearts set on a moterhome, but we thought this only possible when our mortgage was paid off, etc. How wrong were we?
We thought “You only live once, what the hell, life’s for living”; we trawled the magazines but the prices even the oldie second-hand ones were out of our range... we despaired... until we had the idea to have a van converted.
Excitedly we went to a local reputable auction where we purchaced (well I did when Dave went for coffee) a Vauxhall Vivaro long wheelbase, ’56 registration, 90k miles, in excellent condition, for £4800.
We then has to find a layout we thought would work for us; we toured every show in our area and got ideas aplenty... we drew our layout on the panels inside the van – despairing that all the things we wanted wouldn’t fit. We found a nearby converter, but had no luck there as they only did VW T5s. We despaired again (Dave’s not a D.I.Y man at the best of times so I wasn’t going to let him loose on my van!). Plus he didn’t want to do it anyway.
Dave was looking through a motorhomes magazine and spotted a company in Manchester who did conversions. The picture in the magazine was of a Vauxhall Vivaro he was in the process of doing up. We rang him and he suggested we call in. Jason was great – nothing was too much trouble and he was soon an instant friend.
We delivered our van to him in October 2009 along with our plans and hopes for our conversion. We had a few phone calls and e-mails just to make sure that he was doing what we wanted. We paid a visit before the final bits and pieces were fitted. Then just five weeks later we had the call to say it was finished. How excited we both were. Just like kids. But 50 – something kids.
When I saw it I burst into tears – it was absolutely fabulous, more than we’d expected even in our wildest dreams. We never thought it would be so good. The whole conversion cost £9.5k (complete with two – ring hob, fridge, shower with two attachments, electric flush loo, cycle rack, ample storage etc), making a total of £15k with all the bits and pieces for inside as well.
Now nearly nine months later we have clocked up over seven thousand miles and had many a week, weekend and day trip out in our campervan.
We wouldn’t change a single thing about it. We certainly can’t fault it in any way. So for those who thought it’s not possible, it is...go for it. But we suggest that you have a reputable company rather than D.I.Y.
So a huge thanks to you Jason, you will be our friend forever." - Sian and Dave Williams
Another recent correspondence:
"Having spent a couple of wonderful holidays in a motorhome my partner and I decided we wanted to take the plunge and get our own 'van. We wanted the freedom to go away for a weekend at a moment's notice, not to have to worry about about getting back for a particular time set by a hire company and to have a 'van customised for our own use. We started reading your excellent magazine and made a list of the things we wanted. In particular we needed a bed that would be comfortable for us (we're both over 6'2"), would be roomy enough for us and our two "little puppies" (two fully grown labradors) as well as having a loo.
We decided we wanted a VW T5 and the salesman recommended Jason Goss of Camper Kong (www.camperkong.co.uk/ or 01204 653128). We went to see Jason and saw some of his excellent van conversions and were impressed with the time he, and his wife Zoe, spent with us in answering all our questions. We build up an excellent rapport with them both and Jason guided us through the various decisions needed for a bespoke van conversion.
We are now the proud owners of a beautiful, comfortable and practical 'van which is incredibly stylish and a pleasure to spend time in. Jason designed a fixed high top with a rear kitchen layout which allows us to have a loo, a two ring SMEV hob and sink, a great oven, fridge, and cupboard and overhead lockers as well as a comfortable seating area which turns into our huge bed. Under-slung fresh and waste water tanks are useful and practical. The overcap locker is spacious and we have ample storage under the seats. An impressive heater keeps us warm on colder days and, most importantly, the "little puppies" love it.
Everywhere we go we get compliments on the 'van and we'd recommend Jason at Camper Kong to anyone who wants a quality bespoke conversion. He was always willing to answer our questions, make suggestions on design, and let us see the 'van in progress. He is a perfectionist with an excellent eye for detail and we can't praise him highly enough." - Rev Andy Braunston & Dr Ian Wilson - Andy Braunston, MCC Manchester, www.mccmanchester.co.uk
